Our Mission

Our mission is to improve the lives of animals throughout the Bahamas by providing compassionate veterinary care, sponsoring spay and neuter clinics, supporting animal relief efforts, facilitating ethical adoptions, and empowering local communities through education. We are committed to creating lasting, sustainable change by reducing animal suffering, promoting responsible animal care, and ensuring that every animal has the opportunity to live a healthy, safe, and fulfilling life. Together with our supporters, volunteers, and veterinary partners, we are giving animals across the Bahamas the care they deserve—and the second wind they need to thrive..

Who We Are

Melissa Marram

Founder and Executive Director

I've been an animal lover for as long as I can remember. My parents love to tell stories about the countless times I tried to convince them to bring home another pet, confidently assuring them that at three or four years old I was more than capable of taking care of it. I dreamed big, even if I couldn't yet reach the kitchen sink to fill a water bowl. Thankfully, they waited until I was a little older before giving in to my endless requests.

That little girl grew into an adult whose love for animals never faded. Over the years, I've had the opportunity to travel throughout the United States and the Bahamas, where I witnessed firsthand the tremendous need for animal care. I met dogs, cats, and other animals struggling to survive without adequate food, shelter, medical care, or hope. What struck me most was that, despite the neglect and hardship they endured, they still looked to people with trusting eyes, hoping for kindness. Once you experience that, it's impossible to look away. That's how Second Wind Dog Rescue was born.

What began as a rescue organization has grown into a broader mission to improve the lives of animals throughout the Bahamas. Today, our work includes sponsoring spay and neuter clinics, bringing veterinary teams and medical care to remote islands, treating sick and injured animals, supporting the health of the original swimming pigs of Exuma, and continuing to rescue and rehome dogs in loving families. We believe that creating lasting change means not only saving individual animals but also addressing the root causes of animal suffering through prevention, education, and access to veterinary care.

I couldn't be more proud of what we've built or more hopeful about where we're headed. None of this would be possible without our incredible board members, volunteers, veterinary partners, donors, and supporters who generously give their time, talents, and resources to this mission. Animal welfare is never-ending work, and there will always be challenges ahead. But every life we save, every clinic we host, every family we educate, and every healthy animal we see reminds us why we do this.

Together, we are creating a brighter future for the animals of the Bahamas, giving them the care they deserve, the compassion they've always needed, and, most importantly, the second wind they so richly deserve.
