Barney’s Story
Barney’s journey started in heartbreaking circumstances. He was found in a park in Palm Beach County, Florida, after a woman was seen leaving him and driving away. He was taken to Palm Beach Animal Shelter, where staff noted how withdrawn and depressed he was. He was just four days away from being euthanized.
At the last moment, he was pulled by one of our volunteers and board members, Laura Joyce. From there, his rescue truly began.
Barney was transported to Massachusetts by a volunteer who regularly moves dogs between states. When he arrived, he was anxious, underweight, and covered in mange—clear signs he hadn’t been properly cared for.
His first placement was with an older couple, who ultimately felt he wasn’t the right fit. He then spent three weeks in a board-and-train program, where he received structured support, training, and consistency to help him reset and build confidence.
That’s when everything changed.
Now renamed Chief, he was placed with a family who immediately saw who he really was beneath the fear and uncertainty. In the right environment, he has truly come into his own—and is now thriving in a home that fits him perfectly. He has a dog brother and a human brother and loves watching the New England Patriots play.
